Soon-Young Lee
In his works, Soon-Young Lee arranges and photographs objects as interior spaces, and determines meeting-points between reality, possibility and fantasy.
Lee’s interiors can remind us of those of Alice In Wonderland or Boris Vian’s Froth On The Daydream. Lee creates scenes: he photographs an interior filled with various objects and intruding plants. The artist reigns over the staged landscape. The domestic miniature space is a potential battlefield, like the chessboard in Borge’s poems Ajedrez – there are no human characters. The objects are the only witnesses of a human presence; they attest the scenes that took place there. They are sealed with past situations. To photograph rather than exhibit the model interiors sparks a dubious reaction. While examining the photographs, we wonder at first whether they are staged or not – and if they are, to what extent. The artist has invented a new creative niche, where the real, the possible, and the imaginable meet.
