Luis Alhama
Luis Alhama was born in Córdoba, Spain in 1984 and spent his formative artistic years at the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, where he attained an MFA and originated his theoretical approach of sculpture.
In his research, Alhama has concentrated intensively on the concept of the strange and disturbing and has applied his findings in the artistic fusion of body and object. In his works, Alhama presents us with human fragments that become part of, and frequently replace, certain functional aspects of objects. Through this specific placement of body fragments the artist relates to the relevance of social context and the ascription of social roles. The spatiality of his art explores the interaction of the hybrid objects with their immediate surroundings in relation to the viewer, implying a theatrical context. Each work, while excluding the viewer through the object's otherness, attaches itself to a natural human empathy about embodiment.
